Sunless tanning, which is also known as self tanning, is the use of chemicals on skin to produce results that are similar to that of a suntan. This practice has become more popular in the last few decades. It began in the 1960s when there was increased concern over the effects of sun exposure and tan beds. The color does not wash off but will fade as the dead skin falls off. Most of these artificial tans will last up to a week, but it will depend on the quality of the product and the usage. Generally, sunless tanning products have no sunscreen or sun-protection ingredients. In contrast to most other tan products, these are not designed for outdoor application or use.



Sunless tanning products may also have Carotenoid-based formulas. These types are considered highly effective, as beta-carotene is an element that is both permanent and natural. Carotenoids are present in many fruits and vegetables and are what give these foods their natural hue. Other chemicals that may be present in sunless tanning products: Tyrosine and Afamelanotide.

Sunless tanning products include specially formulated pills as well. These supplements typically have beta-carotene as an ingredient, which does not have adverse effects on the skin or body. However, excess use of these pills can results in an unfavorable yellow or orange shade to skin. Some pills include Canthaxanthin, which some consider harmful because it can turn skin orange and cause an outbreak of hives.

Bronzers are used as sunless tanning products as well. These may be considered makeup, particularly when in powder form, but give skin a desirable color and glow. Bronzer may come as a powder, spray, gel, mousse, moisturizer or lotion. The ingredients found in these products may also be present in makeup. Bronzing gives a natural glow and subtle darkening.

In general, such sunless tanning products are considered a safe alternative to normal tanning techniques that involve exposure to harmful UV rays. These products give the skin an even tan and natural appearance when they are use properly. Some suggestions for application: exfoliate beforehand, lightly apply the product for even coverage, put it on the top of the hands last, and allow liquid formulas time to settle in and dry.
